About Certification

The Philadelphia Chapter of SHRM strongly encourages its members to pursue HRCI certification.  While pursuit of certification is voluntary, this accomplishment demonstrates that you have, as an HR professional, demonstrated a strong commitment to your chosen field and you will have achieved a solid combination of experience, education and training.  Achieving an HR certification designation differs from certificate programs because in order to sit for SHRM certification exams, you must have the years of experience component.  Whether you are interested in advancing your HR career or in gaining more education in the HR body of knowledge, obtaining professional certification is the right means for you to achieve it.

For information about the benefits of certification, the testing dates and locations, and related information, click here: http://www.hrci.org/certification/ov/.  For information regarding exam eligibility requirements, click on Exam Eligibility Requirements (effective for testing beginning 5/1/11).

Philadelphia SHRM Fall 2011 PHR/SPHR Study Group

The Philadelphia SHRM Study Group facilitators are dedicated to helping current HR professionals prepare for the upcoming certification exam. They are experienced and certified HR professionals who, with input from participants, provide guidance and recommendations in setting the study schedule and program. The goal is for each participant to benefit from actively applying the combination of (1) his/her HR experience; with (2) the exchange of information from participants and facilitators in the group; and (3) studying the SHRM Learning System.

The Fall 2011 PHR/SPHR Certification Study Group will meet on Tuesday evenings at the Goodwin College of Drexel University from 6:00 pm to 8:45 pm commencing September 6, 2011 and continuing through December 6, 2011.

  1. All registrants for the study group must fulfill the demonstrated exempt-level HR experience requirement as set forth in HRCI's Exam Eligibility Requirements.  Anyone registering without the requisite experience will not be accepted.*
  2. In order to participate in the study group weekly meetings, all participants must register by the registration deadline to take the certification exam being conducted from December 1, 2010 to January 31, 2011.
  3. Participants will need to purchase the 2011 SHRM Learning System at the time of their study group registration.  The discounted rate for study group participants is $530.00.  Please note that SHRM Learning Systems published before 2011 do not contain up-to-date information necessary to prepare for the December 2011/January 2012 exam.

We regret that at present there is no active study group being scheduled through Philadelphia SHRM for those planning to take the GPHR exam.

*If you are interested in becoming an HR professional, but have no direct experience in HR, you may want to consider registering for Villanova's program, The Essentials of Human Resource Management.

Study Group Testimonials
PhillySHRM Study Group
3/11/11

Looking back on the path to my recent SPHR certification, I believe that the SHRM study group was the most significant factor in my successfully attaining that certification. The excellent tools, the resources and the dicipline of having a weekly class helped me to find the time to prepare well. Studying in a team alsoallowed me to better understand the "why" of several of the more complex areas of ever changing HR regulation.
Jim Cipar, SPHR

After several discarded attempts on my own to prepare for the SPHR exam, I joined the Philadelphia SHRM study group last fall. Membership in the group provided a significant discount on the study materials which was a financial incentive. I found that the weekly meetings with a group of peers provided an accountability and an incentive to keep pace with the materials. The opportunity to discuss the topics in a group setting and get real life input made it a great learning experience. Additionally, I enjoyed the opportunity to meet interesting Human Resource colleagues. I almost feel that successfully passing the test was a side benefit! Thank you.
